A favorite of my Dad’s when asked, “What have you been doing today?” His reply was usually ” Oh me and your mother didn’t do anything. Just stared at the walls all day.”
Or another was the reply when we called and asked about a “special” day, birthday or Mother’s or Father’s day when we could not be there, the reply was “it was just like any other day.” When I would answer with “Why didn’t you do something to make it special?” the reply was “there was no one here but me and your Mom. At our age, we don’t make days special.”
I am sure that sometimes he would make the same statement, even when one of us was able to be there.

These are the statements I grew older with. They were Dad’s responses, Mom’s were much more positive. Dad began having dementia issues. We did not live through the changes in his personality as Mom did. So many questions she could have answered had I known how to ask.

A study published in the Journal of Aging and Health found that being open to new thinking predicted a longer life.
Other studies this year have linked the openness trait with lower metabolic risk. (Just in case you’re unsure of this term- Metabolic syndrome is associated with the risk of developing cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes )
This same report also found that these same people had better self-rated health and more appropriate stress response. (They thought they were healthier and usually had fewer issues.)

This study also was looking at being able to determine whether specific aspects of openness predicted survival rates better than overall openness.
This was done using data from more than 1,000 older men. It was collected between 1990 and 2008.

The researchers found that only creativity, not intelligence or overall openness decreased mortality risk.
One possible reason creativity is protective of health is because it draws on a variety of neural networks within the brain, says study author Nicholas Turiano, now at the University of Rochester Medical Center.
“Individuals who were involved in creativity maintain the integrity of their neural networks even as they age.”
Turiano says after analyzing a study from Yale University that evaluated openness with the amount of white matter in the study subjects’ brains ( This white matter is what supports connections between neurons in different parts of your brain.)
Because the brain is the command center for all bodily functions, exercises for the brain will help all systems continue running smoothly. “Keeping the brain healthy may be one of the most important aspects of aging successfully. This fact is shown by the longer life of the creative persons in our study,” Turiano says.
Then there is stress
There is also the fact that creative people are better able to handle stress.
Creative people tend not to get as easily flustered when faced with an emotional or physical hurdle.
Stress is known to harm overall health, including cardiovascular, immune and cognitive systems. “Creative people may see stressors more as challenges that they can work to overcome rather than as stressful obstacles they can’t.”
Studies thus far have looked at those who are naturally open-minded. This also suggests that practicing creative-thinking techniques could improve anyone’s health.
